Concern has been expressed internationally that the number of Swifts returning each summer from Africa to breed in Europe has declined dramatically. Most modern building methods deny Swifts access and may be critically affecting Swift populations. The modernisation of older buildings used by Swifts may also be implicated.

Concern for Swifts (Scotland) ( www.concernforswifts.com ) and the Biodiversity Partnership have been working together in an attempt to get local authorities, architects and construction compainies to recognise the need to make buildings 'Swift friendly'. As the Bird Recorder for Perth and Kinross I have become involved by proposing that we should try to establish whether Swifts are indeed declining in highland Perthshire and where the main population are located.

Swifts return in May. They are larger than Swallows and House Martins, appear black all over, and have scythe shaped wings. Very vocal Swift 'screaming' parties can often be seen, especially in high summer, flying high above our towns and villages. Swifts have usually migrated south again by mid August.

If you have Swifts entering your property, generally by flying up under the eaves into the roof space or onto the wall heads, it would be most helpful if you could let me know. I would also like to hear of Swifts you may know of in public or commercial buildings please.
